Maintaining a Safety-First Culture with Breadcrumb
To better cultivate a culture of safety and optimize communication across all project sites, the Tepa Companies have recently implemented Breadcrumb, a modern jobsite safety and compliance tool built for the construction industry.

Tepa’s idea to use Breadcrumb started with a need for faster orientations. Previously, teams were using Procore fillable PDF forms for worker safety orientations to convey site rules and regulations. Since crews had to share iPads, orientations could take five minutes or more per person, making orientations for large crews time-intensive. With Breadcrumb, crew members can access orientations simultaneously on their personal phones, with multilingual support available. Construction Site Safety & Health Officer Larry Banwart says this multilingual option helps “bridge the gap” in language barriers and facilitate the orientation.

Breadcrumb also offers a more streamlined sign-in process and mass notification system that Tepa previously did not have. Instead of contractors having to manually sign in and out on physical sign-in sheets, they can now easily scan a QR code on their phone before they start their day. Project Managers can see who’s on-site at any given time based on who has checked in for the day, a feature that Banwart says is “the biggest benefit to Breadcrumb.” Additionally, Project Managers also have access to a directory of workers’ names and contact information they can use to get in touch with site personnel.

Similarly, mass notifications, such as warnings for low visibility, lightning, or windy conditions, are now sent directly to workers’ digital devices, allowing workers on-site to receive start and stop orders in real time. Previously, foremen would be notified about stop work orders, which would then be communicated down the chain of command, resulting in delayed response times for crews. Breadcrumb’s instant mass notification system ensures that each worker has access to the most up-to-date safety guidelines, reducing the risk of continuing work in unsafe conditions. Since the notification system only alerts people who are checked in, people who aren’t scheduled to work or who have left the project altogether won’t receive unnecessary notifications to their personal devices.

The Tepa Companies continue to optimize solutions and prioritize the safety of on-site teams. Tepa has already seen increases in efficiency and accessibility using Breadcrumb, and as its use expands, Tepa is excited to see its impact on different project sites.
